A VERY BRITISH HOTEL CHAIN: INSIDE BEST WESTERN

9PM, CH4 ★★★★ If you’re missing staying at a hotel, this jaunty new series may help to fill the gap – well, a little, anyway. The cameras go behind the scenes at Britain’s largest independent hotel chain, Best Western, checking in to some of their 265 hotels dotted across the UK, from Cornwall to the Lake District. We’ll be meeting the owners, such as Jonathan and Jenny Fletcher (right), and their staff as they strive to make their businesses a success – but this was all before the coronavirus crisis struck the industry…

LIFE AND BIRTH

8PM, BBC1 ★★★★

Tensions are running high in the penultimate episode of this real-life medical drama as 19-year-old Billie-joe has surgery to save her baby while she’s still in the womb, and

Kui is rushed to hospital for an emergency C-section. Giant powerlifter Connor, meanwhile, prepares for fatherhood – and the tears are starting to flow.

THE A WORD

9PM, BBC1 ★★★★

This week’s theme is the relationship between fathers and sons as Eddie surprises Maurice with some good news about the brewery, only to be shocked by his dad’s response, and things come to a head on a disastrous camping trip. Paul, meanwhile, tries to rebuild his relationship with autistic son Joe, but it’s far from easy.

CORONAVIRUS: A HORIZON SPECIAL

9PM, BBC2 ★★★★

Dr Chris van Tulleken, Dr Hannah Fry and Michael Mosley draw on the world’s experts and the latest research to explore what we know – and what we don’t know – about coronavirus. Most interestingly, there’s a visit to Porton Down, where scientists are working on a vaccine. MIKE MULVIHILL

THE ARCHITECTURE THE RAILWAYS BUILT

8PM, YESTERDAY ★★★

Rail enthusiast Tim Dunn (left) is at Surbiton station, which turns out to be a Grade Ii-listed Art Deco gem. It’s the kind of place you might rush through without fully noticing, and you have to wonder how many other stations are underappreciated.

ELVIS AND THE MEMPHIS MAFIA

8.35PM, PBS AMERICA ★★★

The people who worked for Elvis (left) reflect on ‘The King’ – usually warmly, but occasionally quite frankly – for this documentary. They’re a largely unassuming bunch, and include Joe Esposito, who became Elvis’s road manager after they became friends in the Army.

ROB & ROMESH VS CRICKET

9PM, SKY ONE ★★★

Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan get closer to cricket this week than they managed with the NBA last week. In the first of a two-parter in South Africa, the duo eceive lessons from Kevin Pietersen (left), have a go at commentary, and party with the Barmy Army.
