DID YOU KNOW? Steve Coogan

-

Steve stars in fact-based drama Philomena (10.30pm, BBC1), for which he won a Bafta for Best Adapted Screenplay. Here’s a run-down of his early, pre-alan Partridge career…

● Born in Middleton, Greater Manchester, on October 14, 1965, Steve is the third of six children. His musician brother Martin fronted indie band The Mock Turtles, best-known for their 1991 hit Can You Dig It?, while broadcaster brother Brendan presented Top Gear in 1999.

● After being rejected by London drama schools, Steve went to the then Manchester Poly. He was still studying when he joined the voice cast of Spitting Image, in 1988. He was also doing stand-up comedy and commercial voice-over work all through college.

● Frank Skinner supported

Steve at the 1990 Edinburgh

Festival. The following year, Frank won the prestigious Perrier Award and in 1992, Steve won it, too, for his act with John Thomson (The Fast Show), whom he met at Manchester Poly. ● Steve joined the cast of Armando Iannucci’s spoof news show On The Hour, which debuted on Radio 4 in 1991 before switching to TV as The Day Today in 1994. Steve created the voice and character for a sports reporter originally devised by Stewart Lee and Richard Herring. Soon, Steve had made Alan Partridge all his own, improvising the embarrassing, socially inept, constantly aspiring broadcaster we know today.
