CELEBRITY MASTERCHEF

9PM, BBC1 ★★★★

There are some big personalities in this first of a new series of the celebrity cooking challenge, not least fired Apprentice candidate Thomas Skinner (right), who loves a big portion. Football legend John Barnes is definitely a meat-lover and, with the other three contestants this week – Death In Paradise’s Shyko Amos, comic Judi Love and singer and I’m A Celebrity star Myles Stephenson – the kitchens are full of laughs and ambition. Fifteen more celebrities will fire up the burners over the coming weeks. Continues on Friday.

ALAN BENNETT’S TALKING HEADS

7.30PM, 10.45PM, BBC1 ★★★★

Bed Among The Lentils is the first of tonight’s monologues, delivered with a wonderfully refined bitterness by Lesley Manville as Susan, who finds escape from her life as a vicar’s wife. At 10.45pm, Tamsin Greig’s Nights In The Gardens Of Spain is a melancholy tale of suburban life – and death.

MARVELLOUS

9PM, BBC2 ★★★★★

First shown in 2014, this extraordinary drama – part musical, part fantasy – stars Toby Jones as Neil Baldwin, a man who refuses to let his learning difficulties define him or inhibit his ambition.

His range of jobs include clown, kit man at Stoke City FC – and he’s a regular fixture on campus at Keele University.

GEORGE CLARKE’S AMAZING SPACES

9PM, CH4 ★★★

One of the fantastic DIY designs George reveals in this episode is made by an aircraft technician, who has turned a jet engine’s housing into a supersonic camper. George also meets a couple building a magical den for a toddler, and savours the architectural delights at a winery in Chile. SA

Usually on 90 Day Fiance, we follow the culture clash when people from other countries arrive in the US to live with their future spouses; this new series flips that, and tracks marrying Americans to far-off lands. Brittany (left) is a model and rapper who is headed for Jordan – and trouble.

WALKING BRITAIN’S ROMAN ROADS

★★★

Dan Jones describes the six Roman roads he explores in his new series as ‘iconic’, but don’t let that put you off. It’s an informative journey that starts with the 240-mile Watling Street, which the Romans built as their invasion deepened. (Freeview 54, Freesat 133, Sky 153, Virgin 152)

24 HOUR BABY HOSPITAL

9PM, MORE4 ★★★★

There’s a life-affirming spirit to this One Born Every Minute-style series, which was filmed at the Rotunda in Dublin, the world’s longest-running maternity hospital. Among the high points are the interviews with the couples, in which it’s amusing to note how little the men actually speak.

PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS

9PM, SKY ATLANTIC ★★★★

The horror drama moves to LA in

1938 for a lavishly mounted new series about the fundamental evil of men. Natalie Dormer plays a many-faced and manipulative demon (left), while Rory Kinnear is a Nazi-supporting German living in the US, encouraging his new neighbours to ignore Europe.

SALVAGE HUNTERS: THE RESTORERS

★★★ Drew Pritchard’s army of experts assemble for a new series of the Salvage Hunters spin-off. Tonight, Drew (left) has picked up a 1950s ejector seat that he thinks would make a fun office chair for someone ‘a little off the wall’, and takes it to blacksmith Nev to weave his magic.

CELEBRITY GOGGLEBOX USA

9PM, E4 ★★★

The celebrities in the UK version may be more familiar, but this US equivalent has been far more fun to watch. The Osbournes have been particularly good value – especially Ozzy and his creepy ventriloquist’s doll – and Lindsay Lohan (left) has recently joined the line-up.
