Simply and effectively, Hollywood takes Das Boot to its natural conclusion, re-creating the claustrophobic tension on board a nuclear sub and ramping up the jeopardy to apocalyptic proportions. Gene Hackman is the triggerhappy captain on the verge of pressing the big red button.

Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer star as the heads of a Mafia family hiding out in France with their children – interesting casting, given De Niro’s knack with gangsters and Pfeiffer’s role as a moll in 1983’s Scarface. Naturally, they find it next to impossible to keep a low profile.
