MIRIAM MARGOLYES – ALMOST AUSTRALIAN
9PM, BBC2 ★★★★
She was born in Oxford, but actress Miriam Margolyes became an Australian citizen in 2013. Though overjoyed, she realised how little she knew of her beloved home – and in this new, three-part series, she’s changing that. Miriam (right), 79, wants to find out if the Australian Dream is alive, so she’s travelling in a motorhome to discover how modern Aussies live. In this first part, she looks at the state of the housing market, meets thriving Chinese and Burmese immigrants, and learns of the struggles of indigenous people.
GARDENERS’ WORLD
8PM, BBC2 ★★★★
You may think amusement parks are all about the rides, but Advolly Richmond goes to Alton Towers to discover the role plants had in the Victorian trend of creating theme parks in gardens. In South Africa, Nick Bailey hunts for the wild cousins of the crocosmia, and in Kent, we visit a garden filled with vibrantly planted pots.
IT PAYS TO BEHAVE
8PM, CH4 ★★★
In case you didn’t think you were seeing enough of him recently, Rylan Clark-neal is hosting a new game show. The concept, aimed at helping parents to do a better job, is a little odd – cameras film couples at home with their unaware kids, undertaking secret tasks to win money – but it’s worth giving it a go.
QE2: THE WORLD’S MOST LUXURIOUS HOTEL
9PM, CH5 ★★★★
In Dubai’s Mina Rashid harbour sits a spectacular sight –
RMS Queen Elizabeth 2. Once a formidable ocean liner, the iconic ship is now a hotel. This new series steps aboard to reveal its incredibly decadent interiors, and the unique problems of its very pricey transformation. TJ
BOGNOR
8.30PM,
TALKING PICTURES TV ★★★ David Horovitch stars as Simon Bognor (left), an accident-prone investigator for the Board of Trade, in this Thames Television comedy drama that ran for 21 episodes between 1981 and 1982. Former Doctor Who Patrick Troughton guest stars in the first episode.
REEF BREAK
9PM, ALIBI ★★★ You can never tell where this show is going to go next, which makes it fun. Tonight’s new episode opens with a ludicrous exchange between surfer turned crook turned fixer
Cat (Poppy Montgomery, left) and the aide-de-camp to an eastern European general. What comes next certainly wasn’t done on the cheap.
NCIS: NEW ORLEANS
9PM, FOX ★★★
Well, they’ve finally given up on the idea of Pride (Scott Bakula, left) being a bureaucrat as he’s back in the field full-time – Hannah’s been demoted, and she’s understandably bitter. But is Pride up to the job these days? He’s dogged by nightmares after that massive LSD overdose.
PARIAH: THE LIVES AND DEATH OF SONNY LISTON
9PM, SKY DOCUMENTARIES ★★★★ A look at the life of the iconic boxer (left), one the most feared heavyweights of the 1950s and 1960s. His career was shrouded in controversy, though – and here, his suspicious death from a supposed overdose in 1970 is also examined. (Sky 114, Virgin 277)
CODE 37
9PM, MORE4 ★★★
A male escort is raped by a woman in tonight’s new episode of the
Belgian sex crimes drama, in which the Vice Unit’s Bob, Kevin and Charles continue to show staggering levels of insensitivity. Sometimes, they act more like teenaged boys than detectives – thankfully, Hannah (Veerle Baetens, left) is there to keep them in line.
RODNEY P’S JAZZ FUNK
9PM, BBC4 ★★★★
UK rap artist Rodney P (left) tells the untold story of Britain’s first homegrown black music culture, the jazz funk movement. This fascinating documentary features terrific original performance from veteran jazz funk dancers, and rare archive footage from their 1970s heyday. RW
