JANE EYRE (2011) PG ● 1.50PM, BBC1 HHHH Mia Wasikowska stars as Charlotte Bronte’s resolute governess who, after a hard-knock life, falls for her employer, the haunted Mr Rochester (Michael Fassbender, above, with Wasikowska). Both leads are impressive, with Jane just the right mix of wilful and dutiful. 27 DRESSES (2008) 12 ◆ 2.50PM, CH4 HHH One of Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl’s better movies, this romcom makes very easy viewing. Heigl is the bubbly, lovelorn gal who, after donning 27 bridesmaid dresses, wonders when the white gown will be hers. JURASSIC WORLD (2015) 12 ◆ 5.50PM, ITV HHHH Another leading role for Chris Pratt (see Guardians Of The Galaxy, Saturday) – he’s come a long way since playing a pudgy dope in Parks And Recreation. Here, he’s a dinosaur wrangler (above) coming to the rescue when big beasts get loose in the famous theme park. THE JUROR (1996) 18 s 9PM, SONY MOVIES HHH Demi Moore is the juror being wooed and then menaced by Mafia man Alec Baldwin, out to secure a ‘not guilty’ verdict for his boss. Baldwin is gleefully unpleasant, while Moore wears her plucky heroine role well. ORDINARY LOVE (2019) 12 ◆ 10.15PM, SKY PREMIERE HHHH PREMIERE Here’s a reminder that Liam Neeson has a far greater range as an actor than his recent action roles (see Taken, Saturday). He stars as the husband of Lesley Manville’s Joan, who is diagnosed with breast cancer. A beautiful, if sad, study of a long marriage and the challenges it faces. QUARTET (2012) 12 ◆ 10.30PM, BBC1 HHH Dustin Hoffman’s directoria­l debut stars a cast of British entertainm­ent royalty – Pauline Collins (right), Billy Connolly, Maggie Smith and Tom Courtenay, to name a few. It’s set in a home for retired musicians, where old rivalries and romances are reignited.

BEST FRIEND’S BETRAYAL (2019) PG ● 2.15PM, CH5 HH Standard TV movie thriller about inseparabl­e best female friends (Mary Grill and Vanessa Walsh) who become, well, separated when a hunky new man (Jaime M. Callica) comes between them. HEARTBREAK RIDGE (1986) 15 ◆ 9PM, ITV4 HHH Routine but satisfying war movie, directed by Clint Eastwood. Eastwood also stars as a steely veteran who helps a motley bunch of raw recruits to get into shape for battle – and then leads them into the fray. WE OWN THE NIGHT (2007) 15 ◆ 9PM, SONY MOVIES HHH Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix play brothers on opposite sides of the law in this crime drama. Wahlberg is a cop, Phoenix an immoral New York club owner who gets the whole family into trouble with the Russian mob. Eva Mendes (above) is on moll duties. THE GO-BETWEEN (1971) PG ● 11PM, TALKING PICTURES TV HHHH British period drama starring Michael Redgrave as an old man looking back on a boyhood summer in Norfolk. There, he was drawn into a love triangle between a friend’s elder sister (a radiant Julie Christie), the farmer she loves and the viscount she is due to marry. USS INDIANAPOL­IS: MEN OF COURAGE (2016) 15 ◆ 11.05PM, CH5 HHH During the Second World War, a US Navy cruiser is sunk in the Philippine Sea. Its surviving crew (Brian Presley, above, among them) are stranded for days in shark-infested waters. This fact-based pro-forces tale details the men’s bravery as well as the legal fallout. BRICK LANE (2007) 15 ◆ 1AM, FILM4 HHH Adaptation of Monica Ali’s novel about a Bangladesh­i woman (Tannishtha Chatterjee) dealing with a loveless arranged marriage in east London. Satish Kaushik plays her kindly but pompous husband.

THE KENTUCKIAN (1955) PG ● 12.10PM, PARAMOUNT HHH Burt Lancaster’s directoria­l debut is a decent enough western, in which Lancaster (above) also takes the lead role as the frontiersm­an travelling to Texas with his son to start a new life. Walter Matthau makes his film debut as a whip-cracking bad guy. LITTLE FOCKERS (2010) 12 ◆ 9PM, E4 HHH The returning cast keeps the same old gags ticking over in this third film in the Focker franchise, though they are starting to wear abitthin.pamandgreg(teripoloan­dben Stiller) now have five-year-old twins to raise. GLADIATOR (2000) 15 ◆ 9PM, 5STAR HHHH Ridley Scott brought the sword-andsandals epic back to life in spectacula­r fashion. Russell Crowe won an Oscar for his portrayal of Roman officer Maximus (above), who fights his way back from betrayal and humiliatio­n to gladiatori­al glory in Rome’s Colosseum. HITMAN: REDEMPTION (2018) 15 ◆ 9PM, SONY MOVIES HHH Ron Perlman stars in this action thriller as a former Mossad agent turned assassin for hire who, ahead of his retirement, has one last score to settle. Formulaic stuff, but with a decent cast that also includes Jacqueline Bisset, Richard Dreyfuss and Famke Janssen. STEALTH (2005) 12 ◆ 12.05AM, 5STAR HHH Director Rob Cohen attempts to bring the same high-octane buzz he brought to The Fast And The Furious to the US Navy with this Top Gun-style actioner about a high-tech plane on a self-controlled bombing mission. HURRY SUNDOWN (1967) 15 ◆ 12.15AM, TALKING PICTURES TV HHH Michael Caine and Jane Fonda (right) star in Otto Preminger’s ambitious but misfiring drama. It’s set in the American South, where race relations are seething.

DRIVEN OFF THE RAILS (2017) PG

After surviving a train crash, Nicole (Hannah Barefoot) suffers amnesia, but as she settles back into life with her husband, her recovery seems to be going well. Then, a series of men turn up, and she discovers a website that suggests she was leading a sordid secret life.

4.45PM, TALKING PICTURES TV ★★★ British version of Mark Twain’s classic lifeswap tale, starring Mark Lester in the dual roles of poor Tom Canty and Henry VIII’S heir. Charlton Heston, Raquel Welch and Oliver Reed are the other familiar faces popping up. WE’RE THE MILLERS (2013) 15

Comedy starring Jason Sudeikis as a smallfry pot dealer forced into smuggling a large haul of the drug across the Us-mexico border. Jennifer Aniston (above, with Sudeikis), Emma Roberts and Will Poulter are there to flesh out a squeaky-clean fake family.

APOLLO 13 (1995) PG

● 9PM, ITV4 ★★★★ Ron Howard’s classy dramatisat­ion of the thrilling true story of the lunar mission that never made it to the moon. Keeping the tension fraught to the end, Tom Hanks plays Commander Jim Lovell, with Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton at his side, and Ed Harris (above) down at mission control.

SINGLE WHITE FEMALE (1992) 18

With a scene that graphicall­y reveals why stiletto shoes are referred to as ‘killer heels’, Barbet Schroeder’s enjoyably hysterical psychologi­cal thriller stars Jennifer Jason Leigh as the new roommate and cuckoo in the nest of Bridget Fonda’s single woman.

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY (2013)

15 ◆ 2.20AM, CH4 ★★★★ Meryl Streep goes dark in this adaptation of a Pulitzer Prizewinni­ng stage play. A great cast, led by Streep, also includes Julia Roberts, Benedict Cumberbatc­h, Ewan Mcgregor and Abigail Breslin (right) as members of a dysfunctio­nal family who are reunited after a tragedy.

YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES (1985) PG

Upbeat comedy drama following the early years of Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional sleuth. Nicholas Rowe takes the lead as Sherlock (above), a brilliant but undiscipli­ned boy who makes friends with John Watson (Alan Cox) while at school in London.

CARVE HER NAME WITH PRIDE (1958) PG

● 2.50PM, TALKING PICTURES TV ★★★★ Virginia Mckenna got a Bafta nomination for her portrayal of spy Violette Szabo in this fittingly dramatic tribute to the sacrifice of Szabo and the many other unsung heroes of the Special Operations Executive. Watch out for Michael Caine in a fleeting early role. THE GAUNTLET (1977) 18 ▲ 9PM, ITV4 ★★★

Clint Eastwood stars as washed-up detective Ben Shockley, who is given the job of escorting a witness (Sondra Locke, above, with Eastwood) from Las Vegas back to Phoenix for a trial. Chosen because he’s expendable, Shockley has to keep them both safe.

Wolfgang Petersen directs this pleasingly over-the-top action thriller, starring Dustin Hoffman as the virologist investigat­ing a deadly viral outbreak. Donald Sutherland is the senior Army man covering his tracks.

Alternativ­e-history Second World War tale from writer and director Quentin Tarantino. Christoph Waltz is on sinister, Oscar-winning form as a ruthless SS officer, with Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger and Melanie Laurent in support. HOUNDS OF LOVE (2017) 18

It seems remarkable, but this period drama is loosely based on a true story. Tom Cruise tops the cast as the world-weary Civil War veteran finding new purpose in the way of the samurai.

PREMIERE The second film from fashion designer turned director Tom Ford, this is a dark and disturbing psychologi­cal thriller – which wears its style credential­s boldly.
