SUE PERKINS: ALONG THE US-MEXICO BORDER

9PM, BBC1 ★★★★

Donald Trump’s proposed wall between America and Mexico has shone a light on one of the world’s most contentious borders, but what is life really like for those on both sides? That’s what Sue Perkins is keen to find out on an epic 2,000mile journey, criss-crossing between the two countries to hear very differing views about the border in an even-handed two-parter, concluding tomorrow. She begins in the Mexican party town of Tijuana, where local guide Matthew (right, with Sue) promises to show her a good time.

THE REPAIR SHOP

4.30PM, BBC1 ★★★★★ The show that’s guaranteed to leave you with a warm glow returns with a new run in its old daytime slot. Each weekday, Jay Blades and the team will be bringing treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life. First up, a set of shopkeeper’s scales, a leather keepsake bag and an Egyptian table.

INSIDE ANIMAL A&E

8PM, ITV ★★★

This new series goes behind the scenes at two of the

UK’S busiest animal A&E departments, following the fortunes of the staff and volunteers at the Blue Cross animal hospitals in London and Grimsby. This week’s patients are an anxious guinea pig, a tiny orphan kitten and a huge dog – a Dogue de Bordeaux.

EASTENDERS

8.05PM, BBC1 ★★★★ Another sign that we’re approaching something resembling normality is the return of the BBC soap, which has been off air since June, after running out of regular episodes. Now, we’ll rejoin the Albert Square residents as they adjust to a new way of life – socially distanced, of course. MIKE MULVIHILL

2PM, SONY CHANNEL ★★★

Pilot of the based-on-fact US drama about a deaf FBI agent, starring the deaf actress Deanne Bray (left), who later appeared in Heroes. Sue works with a once-abused dog who is ‘a bit schizophrenic’ and doesn’t like loud noises, but still manages to solve crime. More every weekday.

MINDFUL ESCAPES

7PM, BBC4 ★★★

Meditative new series anchored in the concept of mindfulness, the idea of being there in the moment. The camera sweeps through peaceful forests and beneath the sea’s waves in the first of a narrated, nightly fourpart soothe-athon that starts by inviting us to be aware of our breath.

THE NOVELS THAT SHAPED A CONTINENT

9PM, BBC4 ★★★★ Thoughtful new journey through the history of African novel writing, starting with the way it set itself in opposition to such dehumanising portraits as Joseph Conrad’s Heart Of Darkness. David Olusoga (left) looks at the work of Chinua Achebe, author of Things Fall Apart, and others.

BANGED UP ABROAD

9PM, NAT GEOGRAPHIC ★★★

A new series of the gripping docudrama featuring more dramatic true-life cases. The first episode is the story of Peter Bleach (left), a law-abiding arms dealer who found himself working undercover for British intelligence after being asked to supply weapons to a terrorist organisation in India.

SPOOKS

11.20PM, DRAMA ★★★★ The spy drama begins a weeknight repeat from the start. When it began, Spooks was proof that we could do big, slick action on the same scale as the Americans, and its habit of regularly killing off characters kept it sharp. At the centre of all that death is Harry (Peter Firth, left), a man who endures more than his fair share of tragedy. RW

ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL

9PM, CH5 ★★★★ This charming reboot of James Herriot’s book is an escapist affair that harks back to a far more innocent era – just what we all need in these most troubled of times. In part two, young vet James (Nicholas Ralph) is settling into life in the Dales – until boss Siegfried’s younger brother, Tristan (The Durrells’ Callum Woodhouse, right), arrives, bringing chaos in his wake. And James’s day is about to go from bad to worse when he makes a mistake with a local farmer’s cow and enrages Siegfried (Samuel West). But not everything is as it seems…

EAT WELL FOR LESS?

8PM, BBC1 ★★★

Gregg Wallace and Chris

Bavin kick off a new series in Windsor with single mum Holly Macbeth, who’s got her hands full looking after 16year-old Spencer, who has cerebral palsy, and 11-year-old Fletcher. The family are pushed for time and are reliant on ready meals. Can the boys sort out their food and spending?

LOVE YOUR FAMILY GARDEN

★★★ Alan Titchmarsh reveals the secrets to his favourite garden designs from past series. In this second episode, he recalls three memorable family gardens, where his green-fingered team created the perfect teenager’s hangout, a magical fairylike space for the little ones and a woodland adventure garden.

FOOD UNWRAPPED: COMFORT FOOD SPECIAL

8PM, CH4 ★★★

This special celebrates life’s guilty pleasures, from pizza to pork pies, custard to Cornish pasties. Jimmy Doherty’s in Iceland on the trail of fish fingers, Kate Quilton discovers some surprises about Britain’s biscuits and, in Tanzania, Helen Lawal dishes up the truth about vanilla ice cream. MM
