MARY BERRY’S SIMPLE COMFORTS

8PM, BBC2 ★★★★

Trusty and reassuring, culinary treasure Mary (right) returns to soothe us into autumn with recipes that promise to be a ‘hug in a pan’. In this opening episode, Mary is in Paris to go back to her Cordon Bleu roots and reacquaint herself with the French love of indulgence. She has a go at making crepes, dines in a classic brasserie and, as well as a spot of posh shopping, visits a fromagerie, a boulangerie and a patisserie. Back home, she shows us how to create some delicious, simple comforting meals with a French twist. Bon appetit!

ZOO MUM – OUR LIVES

7.30PM, BBC1 ★★★

Meet Sarah Forsyth, who works at Colchester Zoo in Essex.

Her job title is curator, but really, she’s like a mum to the animals – more so than ever during lockdown. With the zoo closed to the public and with four out of five keepers on furlough, it’s been down to Sarah to keep the animals fit, fed, healthy and happy.

THE CRUEL SEA (1953) U

2.30PM, BBC2 ★★★★ From a novel by Nicholas Monsarrat and a screenplay by Eric Ambler – who both served in the Second World War – this drama film follows the men of the Royal Navy convoys as they face German U-boats, and nature’s wrath, on the Atlantic. Jack Hawkins and Donald Sinden star.

NADIYA BAKES

8.30PM, BBC2 ★★★★

Like Mary Berry, Nadiya Hussain also launches a new series tonight, making this the tastiest hour on TV this week. Many of us took the chance to get baking during lockdown and now, Nadiya shows us how it’s done. Over eight episodes, she gives twists to classic recipes, starting with cupcakes and the humble scone.

BRIDGE OF SPIES (2015) 12

9PM, MORE4 ★★★★ Steven Spielberg’s splendid Cold War drama stars Tom Hanks as the American lawyer brokering a deal with the USSR to free a captured CIA pilot.

His negotiations centre on Mark Rylance’s Rudolf Abel, a man convicted of being a Soviet spy. It’s patriotic, but also profoundly human.

CAN WE CURE KIDS’ CANCER?

10PM, CH4 ★★★★

Filmed at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, a world leader in the treatment of children with cancer, this documentary follows three youngsters as they undergo cutting-edge and traditional treatments. At an incredibly emotional and challenging time for the families, the Marsden offers a ray of hope. SA

WAR FACTORIES

8PM, YESTERDAY ★★★★

The Avro Manchester became the Avro Lancaster after the Vulture engines were swapped for Merlins. Alexandra Churchill (left), whose great-uncle flew in Lancasters in the Second World War, brings particular passion to the telling of the bomber’s story.

GENERATION KILL

9PM, SKY ATLANTIC ★★★★ Another chance to see David Simon’s authentic, seven-part drama about the 2003 invasion of Iraq, based on the book by embedded Rolling Stone reporter Evan Wright. Much of the first episode focuses on the boredom of war (left) as the US troops sit about waiting, swearing and philosophising.

TWO WEEKS TO LIVE

10PM, SKY ONE ★★★

The second episode of this quirky comedy about a strange young misfit raised in remote isolation by her mother. Thinking that the world is on the brink of ending, Kim (Maisie Williams, left) faces her father’s killer, while Nicky (Mawaan Rizwan) is forced to make a confession. RW
