Friday, 9pm, ITV2 ★★★★

Some viewers will be familiar with the sinister, dancing Pennywise from the 1990 TV series, featuring Tim Curry (shiver). The demonic clown has now been resurrected to torment a new generation in this two-part adaptation of the Stephen King novel. It’s a highend horror that delivers the usual spooky trappings in glossy style; it’s also nostalgic, harking back to 1980s classics, from Poltergeist to The Goonies. This first chapter is a coming-of-age story about a group of youngsters who stick together to take on Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard, above) when he tries to lure them to their doom. Chapter Two, following the children as troubled adults, is available to buy or rent on digital platforms such as Sky, Amazon and Apple TV.

A STAR IS BORN

(1954) U ● Saturday, 1.10pm, BBC2 ★★★★★ Remakes are a mainstay in Hollywood, but few stories are as successful the second time round, or the third, or even the fourth. A Star Is Born is a famous exception. Starring Judy Garland, this was a remake of a 1937 film – with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March – that was released to enthusiastic reviews. Garland’s film received an equally glowing reception.

Her Esther Blodgett (above), the singer about to go from rags to riches, missed out on an Oscar, but it is widely considered one of her best performances. There are two further remakes of the story, the 1976 Barbra Streisand/kris Kristofferson version, and the 2018 film with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, both box-office hits. But if you want real star power in your Star Is Born, it has to be Judy.

STRICTLY COME DANCING

7.25PM, BBC1 ★★★★★ Tonight, the 12 celebrities and their professional partners step into their dancing shoes as they perform for the first time, and with no public vote (that starts next week). They will, however, get a thorough assessment from judges Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Craig Revel Horwood (Bruno Tonioli will join us remotely from America for later Sunday results shows). Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman introduce the pro dancers, who open the show with a zingy Latin number before it’s over to Maisie Smith, Bill Bailey (right) and the rest to show us what they’ve got.

GUY MARTIN’S SUPERVAN

7PM, CH4 ★★★

Another episode of Guy’s best bits, this looks back on the speed-loving mechanic’s adventures in his trusted Transit van. Once written off in a low-speed prang, Guy nursed the van back to health, and he’s since pushed it to its limits all over the world, including a record-breaking lap at Germany’s famous Nurburgring.

A STAR IS BORN (1954) U

1.10PM, BBC2 ★★★★★ This remake, and subsequent ones in 1976 and 2018, have all but eclipsed the 1937 original film starring Janet Gaynor. Here, it’s Judy Garland playing the ingenue whose star is in the ascendancy, with James Mason equally excellent as her feckless husband. See Classic Film Choice, page 25.

BONE DETECTIVES: BRITAIN’S BURIED SECRETS

8PM, CH4 ★★★★

This episode has Tori Herridge and the team investigating a grisly find that feels especially apt in the run-up to Halloween next weekend. In Bristol, the bodies of 13 people were found, their skulls cut open. The trail leads to a nearby hospital, a well-known surgeon and reports of body-snatching.

JASON BOURNE (2016) 12

9PM, CH4 ★★★

Matt Damon’s rogue assassin is still on the run from the CIA, and he’s looking for answers about his father’s involvement in the programme that turned his own life upside down. Alicia Vikander plays a friend on the inside, with Paul Greengrass directing heart-stopping, around-the-world action.
