Davis (left) was looking for opportunities to advance civil rights, but had to be careful not to look like he was selling out in the process – as he was seen to be doing when he hugged Richard Nixon.

★★★ This week’s real-life drama sees the Inverness Search and Rescue team racing to help two crewmen who are injured after their vessel is hit by a freak wave in the North Sea. Nine-year-old Pippa, meanwhile, needs airlifting from the Isles of Scilly to a mainland hospital to treat her appendicitis.

In a neatly written new culture-clash comedy from the US, The West Wing’s Bradley Whitford (left) plays a grumpy New York intellectual who winds up coaching a small-town church choir. Don’t worry too much about why – the show’s writers don’t – but there are some nice gags to enjoy in here. RW
