The star of the dystopian thriller reveals five secrets from the set

BRAVE NEW WORLD Friday, 9pm, Sky One

- JESSICA BROWN FINDLAY

1

I play Lenina, who works as a technician in a supposedly utopian society that’s banned monogamy, privacy, money and family. Lenina rebels against the system, along with her lover Bernard. There are lots of intimate scenes, but you could say no to things and I even had a code word, kangaroo, which I could have used if I’d felt unhappy. It made me feel freer than I ever had before on set.

2

I make playlists for all the characters I play to listen to in filming breaks, and Lenina was no exception. There’s something of the teenager about the way she’s finding herself, so I included music I listened to at that age, such as Nirvana. I also added some later Beatles, as the series gets quite psychedelic.

The costumes in Brave New World are many and varied, to the point where the costume department allocated different rooms at its large base in

London’s Edgware Road for each type of character – the Alphas, the Betas (of whom Lenina is one) plus all the others. Some of the outfits were amazing – shimmering and futuristic. 4

There’s a lot of pillpopping in Brave New World, and on a few occasions we used tiny plastic beads as a substitute for the soma pills that keep everybody happy. Otherwise it was sugary cake decorations you swallowed as quickly as you could! 5

Demi Moore plays Linda, an outcast in the poverty-stricken Savage Lands away from the main city. It would have been quite easy to be overawed, to have thought of all those Hollywood movies she’s made, but she was really down to earth and approachable, and good company between takes.
