Fans of the radio sitcom character Ed Reardon will be intrigued by this dramatisation of George Gissing’s Victorian novel, which gave Ed his name. New Grub Street is both a satire and a tragedy, and tells the story of a group of writers who are living through a boom time for the printed word. Sensational journalism and popular novels bring their riches, but only to some. One of those lucky ones is Jasper Milvain, who, as his name suggests, has something of the cad about him.

DIY SOS: THE BIG BUILD

8PM, BBC1 ★★★★

The family featured this week are in dire need of help from Nick Knowles and his team. Stephen and Lynn Smedley, from Cornwall, had spent 15 years fostering more than 100 children of all ages, and were looking forward to a relaxing retirement; then, in 2017, their daughter died suddenly. Now, her three sons live with their grandparents, squeezed into a small room with a triple bunkbed. Thankfully, hundreds of volunteers (right, with Nick, his team and the Smedleys) are on hand to turn this loving family’s bungalow into a very special home.

SAVING BRITAIN’S PUBS WITH TOM KERRIDGE

8PM, BBC2 ★★★★

In the final part of Tom’s once hopeful series, pubs are forced to shut by the government, and this could spell disaster for the four he was helping. It’s quite an emotional watch as Tom tries to keep his own business afloat, while he shows us how some are diversifying. But he’s heard very little from one…

8PM, ITV4 ★★★ More from this fun alternative to Top Gear, which spotlights the world’s loudest, fastest and most exclusive cars. Let’s hope he doesn’t dent the bodywork.

I AM PATRICK SWAYZE

10PM, SKY ARTS ★★★★

Famous faces line up to wax lyrical about Swayze (near left), whose skills went way beyond smouldering into the camera. He liked acting because ‘you could never be the best, never reach the end’, but he was also a skilled ballet dancer, figure skater and licensed pilot – and he bred horses.

GHOSTS OF SHEPHERDSTOWN

10PM, QUEST RED ★★★

In Shepherdstown, West Virginia, police chief Mike King (left) says his men are drowning in reports of paranormal events, so he’s called in the specialists to help – hence this townwide spook-hunting series, which is a step up in scale for the genre. (Freeview 39, Sky 149, Virgin 170)

MARK KERMODE’S SECRETS OF CINEMA

10.15PM, BBC4 ★★★★ The critic (left) presents a jaunty guide to the romcom genre in this enjoyable episode. One of his favourites is the mermaid romance Splash (‘I must have seen this film a hundred times’), and he talks about his subject with such passion and insight that it’s a pleasure to watch. RW

LAUREN LAVERNE

7.30AM, BBC 6 MUSIC HHH The title track of Tim Minchin’s debut solo studio album is called Apart Together. Tim, who is an actor, comedian, composer, songwriter, pianist and director, wrote the song after hearing a report on the radio about an elderly couple who died, side by side, in their mobile home.

It’s a melancholy, beautiful work that Tim recorded remotely during lockdown, adding to the poignancy of the song. Tim joins Lauren to talk about the album.
