ARRIVAL

(2016) 12 ◆

Saturday, 11.40pm, Ch4 ★★★★ Denis Villeneuve’s graceful and philosophical first-contact sci-fi drama stars Amy Adams as linguist Louise Banks (above), who joins one of the teams at 12 sites around the world where UFOS – massive podlike monoliths – have appeared. Her mission is to work out how to communicate with the visitors before a jittery military makes the first strike. Haunted by a great personal loss – early on, we are aware that her daughter has died – Louise is awed but inquisitive as she reaches out to the alien ‘heptapods’ (nicknamed Abbott and Costello). After physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) draws a blank, she slowly starts to unlock their otherworldly secrets and, at the same time, gains a surprising new perspective on her loss.

HIGH SOCIETY

(1956) U ●

Saturday, 11.30am, BBC2 and Thursday, 8pm, BBC4 ★★★★★ It’s hard to think of a Hollywood actress more synonymous with glamour and wealth than Grace Kelly, the beautiful and poised star of High Noon and To Catch A Thief, who would become a bona fide Princess when she married Rainier III of Monaco – the year this film was released. A musical remake of romantic classic The Philadelphia Story, it stars Kelly as spoilt society girl Tracy Lord, who, in the decadent environs of Newport, Rhode Island, prepares for her ‘good marriage’ to the upstanding but woefully bland George (John Lund). Before her big day, she toys with her jazz musician ex-husband (Bing Crosby) and a tabloid reporter (Frank Sinatra, above, with Kelly), before maturing enough to make her choice out of her three smitten suitors.
