THE DAMBUSTERS
9PM, CH5 ★★★★
After the Great Plague and Anne Boleyn, here is another of Channel 5’s fact-filled history lessons. Over the next three nights, historian Dan Snow (right) relives the nail-biting countdown to one of the most daring and ingenious bombing raids in history. It’s a mission that was immortalised in the 1955 film, but here is the real story, which begins in the spring of 1943 as squadron leader Guy Gibson assembled and set about training a crack team of 133 young airmen whose mission was to destroy the great dams of Germany using a revolutionary bouncing bomb.
FOR THE LOVE OF BRITAIN
7.30PM, ITV ★★★★
In this new, ten-part series, some familiar faces take us on a tour of some of the nation’s favourite beauty spots – perfect if you’re planning your next staycation. We begin in Cornwall and Devon as Julia Bradbury walks the South West Coast Path, Ben Fogle visits St Michael’s Mount, and Liz Bonnin heads to Lundy Island.
GREAT BRITISH CHRISTMAS MENU
★★★★ Andi Oliver takes over as host of the cookery competition for this seven-part seasonal series. Taking her place on the panel alongside Matthew Fort and Oliver Peyton is comedian Kerry Godliman, who will be sitting in judgment as former Great British Menu winners compete to serve up a festive feast for some key workers.
THE WORLD’S BIGGEST MURDER TRIAL: NUREMBERG
10PM, CH5 ★★★★ Absorbing, feature-length documentary that draws on chilling footage from Nuremberg to tell the story of the infamous trial, at which senior Nazis faced justice. Be warned, though, the survivors’ testimony and graphic footage from the camps is as shocking as ever. MIKE MULVIHILL
GOLDIE: THE ART THAT MADE ME
9PM, SKY ARTS ★★★
Goldie (left) is known as a DJ, but his first love is graffiti, and here he explains what this ‘barbarian art’ is all about. He recalls his time in New York in the mid-1980s, and the picture he paints of a rebellious subculture in the city at the time is, legality aside, an evocative one.
PRODIGAL SON
9PM, SKY ONE ★★★
Imprisoned serial killer Martin (Michael Sheen, left) is genuinely delighted by events in tonight’s penultimate episode. ‘Family reunion!’ he exclaims as tragic news brings both Jessica and his children to his cell. Alas, for Martin, this reunion does not last long…
ATLAS OF CURSED PLACES
9PM, NAT GEOGRAPHIC ★★★
It can be hard to take shows about the likes of the Bermuda Triangle seriously, and host Sam Sheridan (left) knows this. His new series takes a rigorous approach, but he’s also doing this because he wants to find some magic in the world. Destination one is, yes, the Bermuda Triangle.
