WATERHOLE: AFRICA’S ANIMAL OASIS

9PM, BBC2 ★★★★

There has been a flurry of hidden-camera shows, but this new series, hosted by biologist Ella Al-shamahi and Chris Packham (right), uses the concept to look into a vital part of life in the wild. There are wondrous sights as the full spectrum of life and death across the seasons at a purpose-built waterhole in Tanzania is revealed. An ambitious project, it’s a rare chance to see how animals interact with each other – they even form a kind of drinking schedule. Plus, who doesn’t love seeing a lion cub?

GRIFF’S GREAT AUSTRALIAN ADVENTURE

8PM, ITV ★★★★

Griff Rhys Jones’s epic trip is coming to an end, but he has saved some amazing sights for last. He makes his first tandem parachute jump to get a spectacular view of Uluru, which is taller than the Eiffel Tower. He also visits mining town Coober Pedy, and meets a very brave snake-catcher.

GRAYSON’S ART CLUB EXHIBITION

8PM, CH4 ★★★

During the first lockdown, Grayson and Philippa Perry brought light into our lives with a fun Art Club. From the work produced by viewers, entries were chosen to be displayed, and this one-off goes behind the scenes at the Manchester Art Gallery to follow the preparations for the exhibition.

WALKING SCOTLAND’S LOST RAILWAYS

8PM, CH5 ★★★★

This week, Rob Bell heads for the Highlands to trek along the Callander & Oban line, built over 14 years. He climbs up Glen Ogle, where the viaduct looks as good now as it did to the Victorians, visits a power station in a mountain, and learns about Oban’s role in the Second World War. TJ

CRUSADERS

9PM, SKY HISTORY ★★★ ‘More than just regular knights’, the Knights Templar have taken on a mystical air as the centuries have passed. This first in a new series looks back at their stories, juxtaposing epic dramatic representations with surprisingly sober analysis from historians.

NORDIC MURDERS

9PM, MORE4 ★★★

A mother is released from prison for the murder of her husband, then forms a prickly investigative duo with her daughter (Lisa Maria Potthoff, left) in this new German drama. Well-acted by both, it has its surprising moments – listen out for Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up in the supermarket.

BARBRA STREISAND: BECOMING AN ICON

10PM, BBC4 ★★★★ After an unhappy flirtation with acting classes (‘She’s a pain in the neck and she has no talent,’ noted a teacher), Barbra (left) started singing in clubs. News of her voice soon spread, triggering a meteoric rise at the age of just 18. This profile relates that, and what came next, with style.

DIANA ROSS: THE STORY OF THE SONGS

11PM, 5SELECT ★★★

This series, which is much better than its timeslot suggests, continues with a profile of Diana Ross through the prism of three of her songs: Baby Love, Do You Know Where You’re Going To and Chain Reaction. It deals with a lot more in between, too. (Freeview 55, Freesat 133, Sky 153, Virgin 152) RW

search for these washed-up pieces from the past. One day, as her Tube train slowly passes another, a piece of her own past emerges. In the other train, she sees her brother – whom she thought was dead. Nick Perry’s drama takes us on a many-layered trip through past and present London.

THE ESSAY: NEW WAYS THROUGH THE GLENS

10.45PM, RADIO 3 HHH

The arrival of roads and canals in the 18th and 19th centuries opened up the Highlands to tourists for the first time, and the romantic view of the lochs and mountains was born. In the last of his week-long series of essays on the changes these new routes brought to the people and landscapes, Kenneth Steven looks at how they came at a high price. SJ
