EDDIE EATS CHRISTMAS

6PM, DAVE ★★★

For his lively new four-parter, Eddie Hall (left) explores global festive food traditions without ever leaving the UK. In tonight’s first two parts, the 26-stone titan, who was once the world’s strongest man, is in Bristol sampling Caribbean fare and in Yorkshire eating Latin American food.

HUDSON & REX

7PM, ALIBI ★★★ They don’t allow the dog enough personality in this Canadian copcanine drama. He does have plenty of skills, though – in this seasonending double bill, Rex (real name Diesel vom Burgimwald, left) shows off his knack for finding firearms and sniffing out cancer, and reveals one personal secret – a love of burgers.

IN THE DARK

8PM, DRAMA ★★★★

Another chance to catch this intriguing drama adapted by Danny Brocklehurst from Mark Billingham’s novels. Myanna Buring is Manchester police detective Helen Weeks (left). She’s pregnant, and returning home – where dark secrets await. The first two parts are showing tonight.

ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

8.10PM, BBC4 ★★★★

Here’s a neat opportunity to compare the recent Ch5 version with the BBC original, via this festive special from 1990. At 9.40pm, look out for plenty of behind-the-scenes stories from the show, including that of Peter Davison’s (left) awkward audition.

8 OUT OF 10 CATS CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

9PM, E4 ★★★

A new seasonal special for the panel show, which has been hosted by Jimmy Carr ever since it began in 2005. Carr is at the reins again tonight, along with team captains Rob Beckett and Katherine Ryan (left), who are joined by guests Liam Charles, Scarlett Moffatt, Maisie Adam and Tom Allen.

THE GOOD KARMA HOSPITAL

9PM, ITV3 ★★★

A repeat from the start for series two of this likeable drama set at a hospital in Kerala, southern India. The facility is run by the memorably eccentric Dr Fonseca (Amanda Redman, left) and, in the first episode, a heat wave brings new challenges for her team, especially Ruby (Amrita Acharia). RW

MOIRA STUART MEETS

9PM, CLASSIC FM HHH

Andre Rieu has come up with a brilliant formula. He dresses the ladies of his first-class orchestra in big puffy frocks, then whirls audiences away on a programme of waltzes. It’s easy to mock, but the audiences love him, and the musicianship is superb. Moira talks to the ‘waltz king’, and hears about the hard work behind the frills. SJ

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (2016) 12

u 10PM, CH5 ★★★ There is much to attract modern viewers to this remake of the 1960 western classic, not least a topnotch cast led by Denzel Washington, with Ethan Hawke and Chris Pratt. It’s a strong, action-led movie, but some of the swagger of the original is lost in translation.

LEAN ON PETE (2017) 15

11.15PM, FILM4 ★★★★

Brit Andrew Haigh (his drama 45 Years follows at 1.40am) heads to America for this coming-of-age drama.

Charlie Plummer stars as the troubled teenager who finds peace – outside of his difficult family life – at the racetrack. There, he befriends a trainer and the horse of the title. 8.00 9.00
