PICK OF THE DAY
THE BIG NEW YEAR’S IN
9PM, BBC1 ★★★★
With the big parties and fireworks events cancelled, the BBC has come to the rescue with a night of fun – hosted by the charming comedian Paddy Mcguinness (right) – to see out a very tumultuous year. There will be games and surprises with a host of famous faces, as well as a fun quiz we can all do together in our own homes. Later on, superstar singer Alicia Keys is treating us to a special performance of her greatest hits – filmed in LA – either side of midnight, with London’s iconic Big Ben bingbonging to start the New Year.
BEFORE THEY WERE FAMOUS: BEST BITS
10PM, BBC2 ★★★
Not many people can just walk straight into a career, and that’s true of many of the famous faces we know today. From Keanu Reeves flogging corn flakes to Geri Halliwell hosting a Turkish game show, Angus Deayton looks at some top clips of stars’ early days – well, we all start somewhere!
GRAHAM NORTON SHOW: NEW YEAR’S EVE SHOW
10.25PM, BBC1 ★★★★ There are some Hollywood bighitters in this special edition, with Tom Hanks, Emily Blunt, Jamie Dornan and Jessica Chastain talking about their new films. Comedian Nish Kumar is also here to give his satirical take on the year, and Hugh Fearnley-whittingstall has some top food ideas.
JOOLS’ ANNUAL HOOTANANNY

Since 1993, this lively musical extravaganza has ensured we end the year on a high note, and tonight, Jools Holland and his orchestra welcome Michael Kiwanuka, Tom Jones, Rick Wakeman and Ruby Turner. There will also be a look back at Hootenanny performances of past years. TESSA JONES
