POETRY EXTRA: A SEA SHANTY FOR CHARLES CAUSLEY

12 NOON, 5PM, RADIO 4 EXTRA HHH

Charles Causley spoke with a Cornish accent, and the rhythms and phrasing of Cornish speech weave through his poetry. The sea features in much of Causley’s writing, evoking the rugged coastline, the wildlife and the power of tides and waves. This programme gives us a chance to hear some of the late poet’s work.

Christine Mcvie was in a band called Chicken Shack, which often shared venues with Fleetwood Mac. She married Fleetwood Mac’s bassist in 1968, and joined the band full-time in 1970 after troubled founder member Peter

Christine Mcvie (3pm, Radio 2) Green quit. The ensuing decade was full of drama, heartache, big hits, low points and some enduring songs written by Christine. She joins Johnnie Walker today to look back over a tumultuous decade.

7PM, RADIO 2 HHHH Kander and Ebb’s musicals are full of clever lyrics, showstoppi­ng tunes and a big helping of irony. Their shows include Chicago, Cabaret and, bizarrely, an industrial musical for General Electric called Go Fly A Kite. Tonight, we hear some of their hits in this concert presented by Joel Grey, including Maybe This Time, We Both Reached For The Gun and Razzle Dazzle. SJ
