The way he enters the series is quite something. Code Black was inspired by Ryan Mcgarry’s tough documentar­y of the same name, which is also on Amazon.

MOVIE MAGIC MIKE XXL (2020) 12 u ★★★ Channing Tatum’s ‘Magic’ Mike answers a plea for help in this so-so sequel to the deceptivel­y introspect­ive 2012 hit about male strippers baring their souls – among other things… From Monday.

MOVIE EDGE OF TOMORROW

(2014) 12 u ★★★★ Tom Cruise stars in a gripping, Groundhog Day-style action film with a British twang. He plays a soldier living the same battle over and over; Emily Blunt is the even more capable warrior with whom he forges an alliance. A sequel is in the works. From Wednesday.

MOVIE LIFE IN A YEAR (2020) 12 u ★★ A strait-laced boy (Jaden Smith) learns about living from an ill girl with colourful hair (Cara Delevingne) in a basic addition to the melancholy young romance genre, produced by Jaden’s parents. From Friday.

DRAMA BABYLON BERLIN (Seasons 1-3) ★★★★ One of the most expensive TV series ever made in Germany, this sleek drama follows a troubled police inspector into the dark side of 1920s Berlin. You can see that £33 million budget on the screen – it looks fantastic.

COMEDY THE REBEL (All nine episodes) ★★★ Simon Callow plays a 70-year-old widower in a show that delights in him raging against political correctnes­s and fancy coffee. Bill Paterson, Doon Mackichan and Anita Dobson also star.

Stylish flashbacks explain, and Holland’s performanc­e – veering from sensitive to aggressive – keeps us interested. The Army section is brutal. From Friday.

WANDER DARKLY (2020) 12 u (BT TV Store, Virgin) ★★★ Poignant relationsh­ip drama that journeys into the afterlife, with Sienna Miller as one half of a seemingly unhappy couple. Both from Monday.

10 YEARS AGO – EASTENDERS

Phil Mitchell asked Shirley Carter to marry him, having just cheated on her. Shirley (Linda Henry) said yes, then backed out at the last minute, but stayed with Phil (Steve Mcfadden, above with Linda) on the understand­ing he wouldn’t be unfaithful again.

15 YEARS AGO – EMMERDALE

Tom King did not approve of his son Carl dating Chas Dingle but had to put up with it when the pair (pictured) got engaged. At the joint family celebratio­n, Chas wasn’t happy when Tom said he’d be expecting a grandchild in nine months.

Linda Baldwin got a job at the factory for brother Ryan Sykes, who was still reeling after sibling Dean had been shot dead by police officer Emma Watts while robbing the supermarke­t. Realising Emma (pictured) lived on the street, Ryan plotted revenge.
