SUE PERKINS 11AM, RADIO 2

Once again, Sue Perkins steps into the studio to host the Sunday brunchtime show while the amiable Michael Ball takes a break. Sue will be getting another game of On The Ball rolling, chatting to guests and hearing listeners’ Sunday Boasts.

WAYS TO WEATHER THE STORM 4.30PM, RADIO 4

The River Calder flows into the green Calder Valley, on its way to the North Sea. Calder is a Celtic word for ‘rough water’, which makes sense when this river is in full flood, storming through towns, tearing down bridges and turning the green valley into a brown torrent.

The poet Clare Shaw, who lives in Calderdale, hears about the increasing floods the area has endured, and how locals are adapting to the river’s ways.

WORDS AND MUSIC 5.30PM, RADIO 3

Things can go terribly wrong, on and off the stage, in the theatre. Phones ring while Julius Caesar dies, and guns fail to go off for a murder scene. Actors play nasty tricks on each other, and members of the audience fall to fighting in the stalls.

Rory Kinnear and Indira Varma read accounts of life upon the wicked stage, while the soundtrack features Ethel Merman, Frankie Howerd and Henry Purcell.

BARRY HUMPHRIES 9PM, RADIO 2

‘It’s love, it’s love alone that caused King Edward to leave the throne,’ sang Lord Caresser about the time of the Abdication. Barry Humphries includes this sweet calypso in the second of his new series, featuring forgotten musical masterpieces from his vast record collection. Elsie Carlisle’s Little White Lies and Arthur Hall’s The Flapper Wife are also on the bill.
