TODAY’S RADIO
PICK OF THE POPS
1PM, RADIO 2 ★★★ Paul Gambaccini strikes gold as he mines the music archives for the hits of April 1979 and 1991. April, it seems, is a mighty good month for music, so get ready to Rock The Casbah with the Clash, prance around to the Village People and then Sit Down with the Manchester band James.
SIMON MAYO’S ESSENTIAL ALBUMS
3PM, SCALA ★★★ The conductor Leopold Stokowski was born on April 18, 1882. Simon celebrates Stokowski’s coming anniversary by playing music from Disney’s 1940 animation Fantasia. Made at a huge cost and employing more than 1,000 technicians, this classic film introduced many cartoon fans to the world of classical music. Today, Simon plays The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas and Night On Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky from the Fantasia soundtrack.
SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
7PM, CLASSIC FM ★★★ Andrew Collins picks music from some of his favourite films, including a track from Frozen that almost got dropped from the final cut. Themes from The Dark Knight and Pirates Of The Caribbean – plus John Williams’s inspired score for Schindler’s List – are also on the bill.
DEATH AND TAXIS
9.45PM, RADIO 4 ★★★★ A little man in a white hat hid round the corner when Andy Warhol opened the door of his New York home. It was Martin Scorsese, who was on the lookout for pharmaceutical refreshment. This and many another incidents were logged in Warhol’s diary, which has been dramatised for radio. Scott Capurro plays Andy, while Ronni Ancona and Jon Culshaw play pretty much everyone who was anyone in 1970s New York.
