PICK OF THE DAY
THE REPAIR SHOP
8PM, BBC1 ★★★★★
Jay Blades and the team of expert restorers wipe away the years, bringing more heirlooms and their histories back to life. Painting conservator Lucia Scalisi has a real treat when she works on a rare portrait of Charles II after the ‘merry monarch’ lost his shine under years of grime. Silversmith Brenton West tackles a treasured and well-travelled trunk brought in by Nadia and Mahbuba (right), goldsmith Richard Talman pieces together a broken engagement ring, and Julie Tatchell and Amanda Middleditch fix up a very special toy donkey.
PAUL O’GRADY: FOR THE LOVE OF DOGS 8PM, ITV
★★★
As ever, this series tugs at the heartstrings with stories of neglect that have happier endings, thanks to the dedicated staff and volunteers at the Battersea animal rescue centres. This week, Paul stops a Bichon feeling lonely, trains a lively beagle cross, and helps a shell-shocked Staffie.
THE GREAT BRITISH SEWING BEE 9PM, BBC1
★★★★
The theme this week is the great British summer, so expect shorts, floaty evening wear and button-down sun dresses. The 11 remaining sewers have to keep their fabrics under control as they race to the neatly bagged-out finish line – and hopefully, all of them will finish this time.
FIRST DATES HOTEL 9PM, CH4
★★★★
The blind dates in this episode look great on paper, but how will they play out in real life? Priti is an architecture student who wants a rugged older man with tattoos – enter tattooed Australian Nick. Meanwhile, firefighter Katie is matched with another Katie, and Richard is on the same page with a fellow comic-book fan.
