The firm promised tax breaks to attract wealthy investors, but falsified expenses to enable investors to claim tax repayments. Rob was sentenced to nine years in prison, and served just half of that. As revolution broke out in Paris, Chopin arrived in Britain; he was weak, ill and in need of money. He taught piano, often to pupils who never paid, and gave concerts and private performanc­es while his health deteriorat­ed. In the

August of 1848, he arrived in Manchester to give a concert at the Gentlemen’s Concert Hall. The vast hall was filled with an audience of 1,200, but Chopin, in his weakened state, felt overpowere­d by the event. Donald Macleod concludes his week-long series on the great pianist and composer with this account of Chopin’s taxing and sometimes triumphant final tour.
