THE PURSUIT OF LOVE

9PM, BBC1 ★★★★★

This exuberant three-part adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s 1945 novel follows upper-crust bright young things as they blaze a trail through the inter-war years. Lily James and Emily Beecham star as Linda and Fanny (right), cousins with very different outlooks on life – Fanny is well-educated and quite serious, while Linda ‘lives in a world of superlatives’, and has a blind devotion to the idea of love that will surely be her undoing. Written by Emily Mortimer (who plays Fanny’s flighty mother), its superb cast also includes Dominic West and Andrew Scott.

GODS OF SNOOKER 9PM, BBC2

★★★★

From bad boys to boring guys, snooker has it all. This series charts the heyday of a game whose star players treated the table like rock stars did the stage. Alex Higgins, the focus of this first part, really was like a hurricane. When he stormed to the World Championship in 1972, his maverick style helped to bring snooker to the masses.

SAS: WHO DARES WINS 9PM, CH4 ★★★

Ant Middleton and the team of tough nuts are back in the wilds of Scotland, where 21 new recruits will find out just how raw and uncompromising the SAS selection process is. In this breakneck first episode, they run 4,000ft up a mountain and abseil 100ft down an oil rig – all after facing a brutal ambush. Who’s in and who’s out?

FARGO 10PM, CH4

★★★★

The fourth season of the crime anthology stars the famously manic comic Chris Rock, rather good in a more subdued role. He’s the head of an AfricanAmerican crime syndicate, sealing an uneasy peace with the Italian Mafia. Jessie Buckley and Ben Whishaw also star in a show that thrives on its eccentric characters. SA
