Showing as part of a tribute day to Michael Caine (below), Richard Attenborou­gh’s war epic dramatises Allied efforts to infiltrate occupied Holland in 1944. Sean Connery and Gene Hackman are also among the cast.

Michael Caine again, this time alongside Laurence Olivier and Michael Redgrave in a telling of the monumental campaign that ultimately changed the course of the Second World War. It’s all in the aerial action scenes, of course, which are satisfying­ly well-staged.

In one of his finest performanc­es, Michael Caine stars as the old soldier turning vigilante, striking back against the gangs of disaffecte­d and violent youths on his estate.

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991) 18

Jonathan Demme’s prestige psychologi­cal horror won the big five Oscars, breaking an Academy bias against horror movies. It’s a chilling exercise in cat-and-mouse fear and suspense, with Jodie Foster as an FBI cadet, a fly caught in a dangerous web.

Having had a pop at Batman, Tim Burton sinks his teeth into another cult 1960s item, casting Mark Wahlberg in Charlton Heston’s role and Helena Bonham Carter as decent chimp Ari (above, with Wahlberg).

Luc Besson’s visionary sci-fi is over the top, borderline bonkers, but it works brilliantl­y. This is essentiall­y a prophetic tale about a special being (Milla Jovovich) who holds the key to saving the Earth. Bruce Willis is the cab driver into whose protective lap she falls.

4.15PM, CH4 HHH Robin Williams shows that drag is no drag in this winning comedy. He’s a divorced dad who dons a wig and a dress to impersonat­e an old Scottish housekeepe­r (above) and spend time with his children. Sally Field plays his ex-wife, with Pierce Brosnan as her suave new boyfriend.

TOMB RAIDER (2018) 12

Based on the video game character launched in 1996, this action adventure stars Alicia Vikander as the athletic Lara Croft, who follows a trail of clues when she investigat­es the disappeara­nce of her father.

IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK (2018) 15 9.45PM, BBC2

Based on the novel by James Baldwin and directed by Barry Jenkins, this intense drama stars Kiki Layne as Tish, a newly engaged Harlem woman who faces a race against the clock to prove her lover’s innocence while carrying their first-born child.

ROSIE (2018) 12

This downbeat Irish drama is based on a script by Roddy Doyle. The story unfolds over the course of 36 hours as Rosie (Sarah Greene, right), a mother-of-four, desperatel­y tries to keep her family afloat as they become homeless when their rented house is put on the market and she must find new accommodat­ion.

This drama stars Maxine Peake as a fictional female stand-up comic, doing the rounds on the northern club scene during the 1970s. Turning the sexist heckles into a battle cry, she scrambles her way to the top.

This Icelandic black comedy stars Halldora Geirhardsd­ottir as the fighter of the title. In the beautiful surroundin­gs of rural Iceland, she’s a fierce bow-and-arrow-wielding eco-warrior.

11.25PM, GREAT! MOVIES HHHH Jim Carrey (right) adds a very dark tone to his Ace Ventura wackiness in this black comedy about a man (Matthew Broderick) whose life is taken over by a TV technician. Ben Stiller directs and, unsurprisi­ngly, it’s the comedy of sheer embarrassm­ent that is its forte.
