PICK OF THE DAY
BLAIR & BROWN: THE NEW LABOUR REVOLUTION
9PM, BBC2 ★★★★★
If you remember BBC2’S brilliant Thatcher: A Very British Revolution, this new, five-part inside take on the rise of New Labour and the friendship and power struggle at its centre is of a similarly peerless quality. ‘The prince couldn’t wait for the king to die,’ is how one contributor characterises the tension between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown (right) – both men talk at length here, while others, such as Neil Kinnock and Peter Mandelson, give an outside perspective on their extraordinary partnership.
EGGHEADS 6.30PM, CH5
★★★
After 18 years on the BBC, the quiz hosted by Jeremy Vine jumps to Ch5 for this new series. Among the contenders taking on the elite Eggheads team – a new member will be added next week – are
Jay Flynn, who was awarded an MBE for creating the virtual quiz that took off like a rocket during the first lockdown.
THE GOES WRONG SHOW 8.30PM, BBC1
★★★★
Chris Bean returns as ‘the directorrrr’, and punishes the rebellious Robert by confining him to non-speaking roles in a play by Shakespeare (Colin, not William). Robert rebels by finding every possible way to make a noise, but the highlight of this production is a scene of hilarious exasperation for poor Vanessa as the queen.
SILENT WITNESS 9PM, BBC1
★★★★
The personal and professional both simmer to intriguing effect in the last double bill of the series. On the professional front, a body from a care home is passed to students in the name of science, and they find something suspicious. On the personal side, one of those students is giving Nikki the eye. ROBIN WIGGS
