REBUS: FLESHMARKET CLOSE 10AM, 3PM, R4 EXTRA

HHHH Fleshmarket Close in Edinburgh was named after a meat market and, with a name like that, was bound to end up as the backdrop for a crime novel. Ian Rankin has duly obliged with this dark yarn, dramatised in two parts, which has DI Rebus (Ron Donachie) investigating the discovery of two skeletons in a cellar and the murder of an illegal immigrant. Neither of these events will bring much sunlight into Rebus’s dark world.

Clare Balding joins the writer Norrie Bissell for a walk round the island of Seil and across the little bridge that joins the island to the Scottish mainland; this bridge, which takes seconds to cross, has the tongue

in-cheek nickname of the ‘bridge over the Atlantic’. Clare also visits the island’s slate quarries and hears how they once supplied roof tiles for houses all over the world.

In this programme, Adam Rutherford and Hannah Fry hear how these remarkable dogs find the toothpaste section in a shop, navigate their way through a city faster than a sighted person, and deal with route changes and obstacles.

HHH Arabella Steinbacher started playing the violin when she was just three years old, and first performed a Mozart violin concerto at the age of eight.
