The German composer Felix Mendelssohn went on a tour of Europe, and was overwhelmed with joy by the sights and sounds of Italy. He got right down to writing his Fourth Symphony, which is better-known as the Italian Symphony. The composer described it as ‘the jolliest thing I have ever written’, and it comes bouncing over the airwaves from the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester tonight.

BBC WORLD SERVICE HHHH It’s difficult to feel warmly towards snails – given the way they work with their colleagues, the slugs, to destroy our gardens – but, as we learn in this programme, snails play a big part in the world’s ecology.
