In 1968, the Labour government instigated the merger of two car manufacturers — whose marques included Jaguar, Rover and the Mini range – under the umbrella of the British Leyland Motor Company. It proved to be a leaky umbrella, bedevilled by disputes, strikes and poor industrial relationships.
