HHHH Stravinsky didn’t hear the private premiere performance of his concerto Dumbarton Oaks, as he was in hospital with TB. The work was named after the Washington estate of the American couple who commissioned the concerto. By the time the piece had its first public performance in Paris, Stravinsky was well enough to conduct it himself. Penny Gore includes this pleasing work in this selection of concert recordings.

It’s not easy to spot a nightjar, as these grey-brown birds are well-camouflaged. They make an odd noise at dusk and dawn, like wood being chopped, and, when the female is brooding, the males make a strange jarring sound that gives the birds their name.
