★★★★★ It’s an absolute joy to see the great Judi Dench going in search of her family tree in one of the best episodes in the genealogy show’s 17-year history. She begins her journey by trying to find out how her father won his gallantry medals during the First World War, before her investigat­ions take her to 16th-century Denmark.

It’s impossible not to be appalled by the details of the slave trade that are revealed in this new series. In part one, the actors David Harewood and Hugh Quarshie explore how it worked from both sides of the Atlantic, and the way Africans were treated like animals in the way they were transporte­d and housed.
