DANIEL MAYS TEMPLE
Thursday, 9pm, Sky Max
1My character Lee Simmons helped surgeon Daniel Milton establish an illegal underground clinic and assists him with operations. Because of money worries, Lee (above) and Daniel are forced to work with the mysterious Gubby, played by Rhys Ifans. On screen Rhys is menacing, but he’s the softest, friendliest person you could wish to meet.
2 I was somehow persuaded to shave my head on camera. Costume designer Rachel Walsh had given me some fatigues, and I said they made me look like Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver and maybe I should also shave my head like his character. The next thing was I got an email from the executive producer saying it was great I’d agreed to shave my head for the role, and would I do it on camera? So I did, and it does work for Lee.

We suffered what became known as Limpgate when I forgot my character had a limp after being shot in the foot and didn’t remember until halfway
through one filming day.
4For the scenes where Daniel is carrying out surgery, and Lee is helping, I had a tube hidden under my shirt which I used to pump ‘blood’ into the patient’s wound. We got instructions on the correct amount from a real surgeon.

We had this amazing set at a brewery in west London, which included Daniel’s surgery beneath Temple Underground station and a drainage canal. Mark Strong, who plays Daniel, spent a very challenging day immersed in the murky water – his character was hiding a body from bobbing to the surface as Underground staff passed by. The ‘body’ was an actor who had a breathing device to keep him alive under the water.
