THE GREAT GARDEN REVOLUTION 7PM, CH4
★★★
Gardening has gone ‘woke’ in this series, with its team of hipsters making over gardens – designer Joel Bird, craftsman Bruce Kenneth and gardener Errol Reuben Fernandes have given us horticultural tips in real time so that we can transform our own plots. In this last of the current series, the experts set to work on a primary school garden, turning it into an inspiring, interactive space that features ‘crumble corner’ and a tomato sauce bed. Plus, interior designer Laura Jackson shows us around her home.
HAMPTON COURT PALACE: BEHIND CLOSED DOORS 8PM, CH5★★★
By royal invitation, step behind the gilded doors of Henry VIII’S favourite palace in this access-all-areas three-part series. Hampton Court’s chief curator, Tracy Borman, is on the cusp of making a career-defining discovery – a rare item that might have belonged to Anne Boleyn (right) has been found at auction. Plus, we join the palace gardeners as they harvest grapes from the world’s oldest vine – prized by Queen Victoria, these grapes went into the making of her famous dessert wine.
CASUALTY 8.40PM, BBC1
★★★ Holby City’s A&E staff are in for an emotional reckoning in this episode, which was postponed from last week.
Here, David must come to terms with difficult son Ollie’s dark decisions, which weigh heavily on their relationship.
HEATWAVE: SUMMER OF ’76 9PM, CH5★★★★
Britons sweated through the summer of 1976, when temperatures reached their highest in 350 years. This extraordinary feature-length documentary includes archive footage of sunburnt families flocking to swim at the seaside and frying eggs on the pavement. There are also interviews with some of the famous faces who experienced the heat themselves – among them is Trevor Mcdonald, then a young broadcaster, who recalls reporting from the Thames, which had dried up to a trickle of sewage. We’re reminded that the summer wasn’t all sunshine and ice cream – the extreme weather had deadly consequences, all the more serious now in light of our increasing awareness of climate change.
