British teenager gang raped at a Thai resort

- By Alisha Rouse

A BRITISH teenager has been kidnapped, raped and robbed by a gang of local bikers at a picturesque backpacking resort in Thailand, it was claimed last night.

The 19-year-old had been dining with friends in a popular town in western Thailand before she was grabbed off the street by a motorbike gang.

She was gang raped and robbed before being dumped at a local market by the bikers, local Thai media reported.

She is understood to have been eating with other young tourists in the town of Mueang Kanchanaburi, before leaving the restaurant alone and being attacked.

Police sources said the girl reported the attack to local police, who claim to be checking security cameras on the Nanachart Road where she was snatched.

The attack comes eight months after British backpackers David Miller, 24, and Hannah Witheridge, 23, were murdered on a Thai beach. The horrifying killings fuelled tense relations between tourists and the Thai government, after its prime minister claimed ‘beautiful’ British girls weren’t safe in bikinis.

In his controversial statement, Prayuth Chan-ocha said: ‘They think our country is beautiful and is safe so they can do whatever they want – they can wear bikinis and walk everywhere. Can they be safe in bikinis… unless they are not beautiful?’

Officials estimate 60,000 British tourists travel to Thailand each year, and the Foreign Office has warned of the dangers of the South-East Asian country.

A travel warning says British nationals ‘have been victims of vicious, unprovoked attacks by individuals and gangs’ It adds: ‘Violent sexual assaults and robberies against both men and women are reported regularly.’

The Foreign Office said it had not been informed of the attack last night.
