Are we right to ban migrants from the EU vote?

-

I’M PLEASED at the common-sense approach by David Cameron to allow only British and Commonwealth citizens over the age of 18 to vote in the EU referendum (Mail). EU nationals can’t vote in a General Election, so why should they have a say in this vital vote? The voting age has been 18 since 1969 — why change it now? Sixteen and 17-year-olds were given a say in the Scottish independence referendum only as a desperate attempt by the SNP to get a Yes vote. Cameron should stick to his guns: we need a fair referendum on Europe as soon as possible.

GORDON KENNEDY, Perth. I’m Disappointed that european Union citizens living in Britain will have no say on whether the UK stays in or leaves. Having married an englishman and moved to Britain in 1957, as a dane, I can’t have dual citizenship and will therefore be unable to vote. shouldn’t foreigners who have lived here for a near lifetime be allowed to have their say?

LENE ORCHARD, Beaconsfield, Bucks. I HAVE no problem with allowing 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote in an EU referendum as long as the law is changed so 16 and 17-year-olds are dealt with in adult courts if they commit a crime and have their names known, as is the case with everyone else who is allowed to vote.

R. MEAD, Alness, Ross & Cromarty. WHY should it come as a surprise that EU migrants will be barred from voting in the In/out referendum? This is a decision to be taken by British people, not half of europe. It’s obvious why the yes camp would want the 1.5 million migrants to vote, as we know what their vote would be. Can we not have anything that isn’t influenced by the EU, or are the yes crowd terribly worried that we might actually be able to make a decision on our own? The argument at first was that a referendum wasn’t necessary unless major power was being transferred to the EU. Haven’t these people realised that about 80 per cent of our decisions now take place in Brussels?
