Gruelling night out on patrol with the selfie cops

- By Andrew Levy

YOU might think it’s a tough task, patrolling the streets at night to protect the public.

But the looks on these policemen’s faces certainly suggest otherwise.

Young women on nights out have been queuing up to take photos of themselves with the Essex officers and posting them on Twitter. One of the ‘selfies’ shows a blonde puckering up to give a peck on the cheek to a beaming bald policeman, who has lent her his hat.

The officer appears with a colleague in another shot with two women – one in a figure-hugging outfit and another in a little black dress. The caption reads: ‘Policeman selfie!’

They also pose by their patrol car with five young friends on a night out.

And it’s not just women who are snapping themselves with the bob-

bies on the beat. One man drapes his arms around their shoulders as they sit either side of him in what appears to be a fast food restaurant. The caption praises them as ‘good lads’.

The pictures, tagged ‘#chelmsfordpolice’, have been a hit on the site. One user wrote: ‘@carlsberg don’t do police officers but if they did…’. Another said: ‘Definitely the coolest police officers ever.’

Essex Police yesterday confirmed it had not set up the hashtag.

But Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh said this type of engagement helps to break down barriers between police and the public.

He added: ‘Social media plays a really positive role …it gives us the opportunity to talk about the fantastic work my staff and officers do…But it’s also about putting a face to local policing, opening up our world … and listening to what they have to tell us.’
