No laughing matter!
Neighbours outraged over comedian’s plans for ‘extension of an extension of an extension’
MICHAEL McIntyre’s plans to expand his £5.6million home are proving to be no joke.
The comedian, 39, has outraged neighbours with the proposals for his north London home – branded ‘ an extension of an extension of an extension’.
The father of two wants to enclose the first-floor terrace, making it part of his study, and turn the roof of the extension into a new terrace.
Since submitting the proposals in July, McIntrye has added French doors along with a Juliet balcony and sash windows to the plans.
The locally listed property appears to have been extended in the past and McIntyre’s plans would see a second floor and terrace added. One of his neighbours in leafy Hampstead wrote to Camden Council calling for the plans to be rejected.
They said: ‘It is time for Camden to take a stand against such developments, which cause harm both to the conservation area’s housing stock and to its gardens.
‘I should like to object to this proposal for an extension of an extension of an extension.’
A conservation group also criti- cised the plans. The Heath and Hampstead Society said in a letter to the council: ‘The proposals display a crudeness of design that would be very destructive of the fine features of the house.’
McIntyre lives in the semidetached house with wife Kitty, 39, and their children, Lucas, ten, and Oscar, eight.
They paid £3.2million for the property in 2009 and it is now worth around £5.6million. Planning documents reveal the inside of the six-bedroom home has been ‘extensively modernised’.
Despite his privileged upbringing and private education at the £18,770-a-year Merchant Taylors’ School, Hertfordshire, McIntyre ran into financial problems as he began his comedy career.
A decade ago he was £40,000 in debt and struggling to make ends meet.
The star, who pocketed £9million from his Showtime tour in 2009, also owns a six-bedroom country home in Wiltshire. The £2.5million property has a tennis court and swimming pool.
A decision on the extension plans is expected by next Friday. McIntyre’s representatives declined to comment.
