Should we stop eating bacon and sausages?

-

HOW soon can we expect to see government health warnings on packets of bacon, sausages and burgers now it’s been decided they’re as big a cancer threat as cigarettes?

REX LANGMAID, Bath, Somerset.

IT’S no surprise to me that the World Health Organisation says bacon and sausages are as big a cancer threat as cigarettes. Eating animal products is bad for your health. But the real reason we should go vegan is that animal farming and slaughter causes extreme fear and suffering to animals.

A CANCER expert warns us to cut out processed meat altogether. So we have confirmation that eating processed meats such as bacon and sausages can cause cancer and shorten your life? At my local cafe I was amazed to see workmen, students and families still tucking into large, all-day breakfasts of bacon, sausage, eggs, beans etc. ‘Will they never learn?’ I thought, as I enjoyed my bacon and sausage. Delicious!

BARBARA MacARTHUR (88), Cardiff.

I LIKE my food to have taste, and consider smoked fish and ham some of the best and will certainly not give them up for the possibility of dying a couple of days later than otherwise.

BRIAN SWEET, Barnstaple, Devon.

SO THE hysteria and bullying continue. As always, it is based on a desire to stop us doing anything we enjoy. To liken eating bacon to smoking cigarettes shows how desperate these fascists really are. Quoting percentage likelihoods of increased risk is also misleading. If the original risk is, say, 10 per cent then a 20 per cent increase is still too piddling for any sensible person to worry about. I suspect politics is the motivation here. And even if you do live longer, all you have as your reward is the real risk of being abandoned (or worse) to an old folks’ home.
