Food allergy boy, 7, killed by pasta lunch

-

A SEVEN-year-old British boy has died after suffering an extreme allergic reaction on a half-term holiday in Italy.

Cameron Wahid was on the Amalfi coast in south-west Italy with his parents Rizwan, 37, Cassandra, 39, and his younger brother.

The family stopped for lunch in a village called Scala last Tuesday, where he is said to have eaten pasta with tomato sauce followed by a bowl of fruit. After lunch the family drove to the town of Ravello.

But within minutes of arriving Cameron began having difficulty breathing and went into anaphylactic shock and cardiac arrest in the town’s main square.

The schoolboy, a keen footballer, was revived by a local doctor. He was airlifted to a children’s hospital in Naples but died on Friday. Italian media reported that Cameron, from East Grinstead, West Sussex, was lactose intolerant and that tests had found traces of dairy protein in the pasta dish.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out this week to establish the cause of death, and prosecutors have opened an investigation into possible manslaughter.

Police chief Roberto Martina said: ‘The mother allegedly told the restaurant he had allergies but it is unclear whether they understood.’ A Foreign Office spokesman said: ‘Our deepest sympathies are with the family following this tragic death.’
