MacDonald confident that Remi will spark a revival

- ADAM SHERGOLD

ASTON VILLA interim boss Kevin MacDonald last night backed new manager Remi Garde to quickly guide the club away from the foot of the Premier League table.

The Frenchman begins work today with Villa four points from safety and facing a home fixture with top- of-the-table Manchester City on Sunday.

But MacDonald struck an upbeat note, saying: ‘It’s a big task but Remi must have confidence in his own ability and confidence in the players to take the job. He’s going to take us out of relegation trouble.

‘With Remi’s experience and knowledge, he will get them to play his way very quickly. Villa are not one of the bottom three teams in the league. He saw a Villa team tonight with a great work ethic and a desire to triumph over adversity after conceding two goals. We put a Spurs team with outstanding players under pressure.’

Tottenham extended their unbeaten league sequence to 10 matches, but manager Mauricio Pochettino isn’t getting carried away. He said: ‘It means nothing. In football, it is always the present. The next game is very important. Today was not easy. It was their first game with a new manager and they were very motivated.’

Meanwhile, Watford are among the clubs weighing up offering Emmanuel Adebayor a route back into football. The striker has been without a club since Spurs cancelled his contract in September.
