5 THINGS FOR BOSS TO FIX

- ADAM SHERGOLD

1 GOALS need to be found ... and quickly. Before last night, Villa had scored nine from 10 league games — the joint-lowest alongside Stoke. Remi Garde must get Gabriel Agbonlahor, Jordan Ayew and Rudy Gestede firing, but he did turn Alexandre Lacazette and Bafetimbi Gomis into scoring machines at Lyon.

2 FULL BACKS should stick to their day job. At Lyon, Garde played Maxime Gonalons at the base of a midfield diamond which allowed the full backs to attack. Left back Henri Bedimo made nine assists in Garde’s last season but given how easily Spurs got past Alan Hutton and Kieran Richardson last night, any attacking intent should be curbed for now.

3 JACK GREALISH must be appreciated. He is an outstanding talent but Tim Sherwood put him through a ‘mini preseason’ rather than letting him train with England. A former Lyon academy boss, Garde knows how to encourage young players and should put Grealish, 20, at the centre of his plans.

4 USE the summer signings. When announcing Garde’s appointment, chairman Randy Lerner said it is Villa’s ‘responsibility’ to ‘harvest’ the £48.6million-worth of players bought in the summer. Yet of those signings, only Joleon Lescott made Kevin MacDonald’s starting XI here. Garde must make use of the new players — unless ‘harvest’ means sell.

5 TURN Villa Park into a fortress. Since the start of the 2011-12 season, Villa have won just 20 of 81 home league games and collected a total of 82 points from 243 available. Villa Park is one of the best grounds in the country and Garde needs to make it a fearsome place for teams to visit once again.
