Scything enjoys ‘Poldark effect’
FOR many, the draw of Poldark’s topless scything went no further than actor Aidan Turner.
But the BBC show’s scene, pictured, has also led to increased interest in scything.
Instructors from the Scythe Association say that, since the historical drama aired, they have seen a rise in the numbers wanting to learn more – something they have dubbed the ‘Poldark effect’.
Andrea Gilpin, who runs courses in the Welsh borders area, said: ‘It was brilliant the way it got things going and people talking. What I hear is a lot of trainers did feel the news boosted interest.’
The 44-year-old said that the numbers joining her courses over the summer had increased by a third on normal.
Scything, an ancient method, is now seen as a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective way of mowing small areas or wildflower meadows.
