IN 1844, Chambers’ Edinburgh Journal published the first detective story in Britain. It was The Purloined Letter, written by U.S. author Edgar Allen Poe. Bafflingly, it was the third in the series about an amateur sleuth.

IN 1872, Scotland met England in the firstever soccer internatio­nal, at Hamilton Crescent, Glasgow. The game was played in front of 4,000 fans and ended in a 0-0 draw.

IN 1949, Paddi Pads, the first disposable nappies, went on sale, made by Robinson’s of Chesterfie­ld. They were invented by Valerie Hunter- Gordon, a mother of three who was married to a soldier.
