IN 1844, Chambers’ Edinburgh Journal published the first detective story in Britain. It was The Purloined Letter, written by U.S. author Edgar Allen Poe. Bafflingly, it was the third in the series about an amateur sleuth.

IN 1872, Scotland met England in the firstever soccer international, at Hamilton Crescent, Glasgow. The game was played in front of 4,000 fans and ended in a 0-0 draw.
