Cut­ting down on salt doesn’t mean you have to com­pro­mise on taste

CHECK the la­bels on these two frozen beef lasagne and you’ll see that while they have iden­ti­cal weights and sim­i­lar calo­rie val­ues (492 for Tesco, 453 for Asda), their salt lev­els are quite dif­fer­ent — the Tesco prod­uct has 1.3g less salt, around 20 per cent of our daily rec­om­mended limit.

It’s not easy to pin­point why they’re so dif­fer­ent — but the ef­fect is likely to be cu­mu­la­tive, re­flect­ing not just sea­son­ing, but the amount of salt in the tomato puree and cheese.
