Adele’s flood of tears at Brits

Singer’s record night at the Brits (and my how she’s blossomed)

AN EMOTIONAL Adele was crowned the undisputed queen of British music last night – taking more Brit awards in one night than any other solo artist.

And as she arrived at the bash, she was almost unrecognisable from the aspiring pop star who first came to the event in 2008.

Looking slimmer in a stunning red gown and with a regal air of confidence, she cut a different figure to eight years ago when she wore a less than flattering combination of trousers, dress and jacket that could have come from a high street store.

Her bumper evening also completed her transformation from the ladette who swore at the cameras and raised her middle finger when her speech was cut short during the 2012 event.

Her victories last night in the Best British Female Solo Artist, Best British Single, Best British Album and Global Success categories saw her match the record set by Blur in 1995.

Coldplay also triumphed in the Best British Group category for the fourth time, making them the most successful home-grown band ever at the Brits. And a star-studded tribute was laid on for David Bowie, who died last month from cancer aged 69. Gary

‘Her entire look is flawless’

Oldman and Annie Lennox gave a moving eulogy before singer Lorde performed Life on Mars.

Adele, arriving at London’s O2 Arena in a wine-red gown by designer Giambattista Valli, gave a speech emphasising the importance of girl power as she took the best female gong. Collecting her second award – Best British Single – she made the most of her cockney accent, joking: ‘It’s getting out of hand already.’

British astronaut Major Tim Peake reduced the singer to tears as he presented the Global Success Award from the International Space Station. The mother of one said: ‘My kid is going to think I’m so cool.’

Broadcasters then attempted to beep out her swearing before she broke down into uncontrollable sobs, adding: ‘It’s not bad for a girl from Tottenham who doesn’t like flying to get global success.’

Accepting the award for Best British Album, she thanked her Eton-educated boyfriend Simon Konecki, adding: ‘ I’m sorry about swearing earlier and the ugly cry face.’

Talking about their three-yearold son, Angelo, she shouted: ‘This is all for you Peanut.’ Singing on stage, Adele clearly had a ring on her engagement finger – reigniting rumours she had secretly married partner Mr Konecki. The wins cap an impressive few months for the singer, 27 – whose full name is Adele Adkins. And it seems that her £51million fortune can now afford her an extra level of glamour.

With her carefully styled hair, she certainly outshone Kylie Minogue, who wore a gothicinspired number and Rihanna’s relatively demure lilac outfit. Many took to Twitter to say how much they loved Adele’s red carpet look. One wrote: ‘Adele’s dress and entire look is flawless.’ Only boy band One Direction held her back from a clean sweep last night, beating her in the Best British Artist Video category.

Still, she took her total tally of wins to eight, making her the most successful female solo artist in the event’s 39-year history, jointly with Annie Lennox. Only Robbie Williams has more, with 17. Award viewers were left shocked when Rihanna gave arguably the ceremony’s most explicit performance, taking to the stage just 15 minutes after the 9pm watershed to gyrate and simulate sex with rapper Drake.
