Sports cars fuelling new jobs boom

- By Laura Chesters

BRITAIN received a jobs boost as aston martin, mclaren and airbus all announced a ramp up in production across the UK.

James Bond’s car maker aston martin has chosen st athan in south Wales for a new factory to build its DBX model ( pictured below), snubbing overseas markets.

it expects to create up to 1,000 new jobs in st athan and its Gaydon headquarters in Warwickshire. the £200m investment by the 103-year firm could also create 3,000 posts in the supply chain.

Welsh First minister Carwyn Jones said the region had been working for almost two years ‘in the face of fierce competition’ from across the world to secure the factory. he added: ‘Our success is testament to the reputation, dedication and skills of the Welsh workforce.’

the deal will mean cars rolling off a production line in Wales for the first time in almost 50 years.

meanwhile, sports car maker Mclaren is preparing to launch the 570Gt which will cost £154,000. it promises to sell at least 3,000 cars this year and it is adding a second shift at its factory in Woking, surrey, to double daily production to about 20 cars.

Figures released by the society of motor manu- facturers and traders revealed UK car production rose 8pc last month to 137,552 vehicles as strong overseas demand helped exports jump 9.7pc. there was slower growth in the home market, with production for UK buyers up 2.5pc.

in the aerospace sector, French giant airbus made a u-turn on plans to cut production of its a330 aircraft yesterday.

the aircraft- maker employs around 15,000 in the UK across facilities in Filton, near Bristol, and Broughton, north Wales.

it will now build seven a330 widebody jets per month from 2017. it had planned to cut output to six from ten a month to prepare for its new a350 jetliner and an a330 upgrade. however the cut will now not be so drastic. the update from airbus came as it reported annual revenues up 6pc to £46.3bn as profits rose 2pc to £2.9bn.
