Glorious hat-trick for Sportsmail

-

THE Daily Mail has been named Sports Newspaper of the Year at the annual SJA British Sports Journalism Awards for the third successive year.

Sportsmail’s chief sports reporter, Matt Lawton, was named Sports News Reporter of the Year for the second consecutive year, and Sports Agenda columnist Charles Sale was highly commended.

Chief sports writer Martin Samuel was also highly commended in the Feature Writer category at the awards, run by the Sports Journalists’ Association in London.

The Daily Mail has also been shortlisted for a string of honours at the annual Press Awards – the Oscars of British journalism.

The paper has once again been nominated as Newspaper of the Year, and our widely acclaimed investigation into the scandal of cold-calling charity sharks has been shortlisted for the special Cudlipp Award, for excellence in popular journalism. The inclusion of our investigation follows a statement from a committee of MPs last month which commended the paper, and particularly our Investigations Editor, Katherine Faulkner, for the ‘highest standards of ethical investigative reporting’. Mail feature writers dominate the judges’ selection with Guy Adams, Paul Bracchi, Robert Hardman, David Jones and Tom Leonard taking five out of six nominations in the Feature Writer of the Year category.

Dominic Lawson and Ian Birrell are both in the running for Columnist of the Year, and Natalie Clarke and Rebecca Hardy could win Interviewer of the Year.

The Mail is also shortlisted for Front Page of the Year for ‘Tiny victim of a human catastrophe’, the harrowing image of the little boy who drowned during his refugee family’s desperate bid to reach Greece.

Sportsmail has been nominated in the Sports Team of the Year category, and writer Martha Kelner – highly commended in the SJA awards – has been nominated as Young Journalist of the Year.

The Press Awards, run by the Society of Editors, will be presented at the Hilton Park Lane Hotel in London on March .
