The PM, his mum and a jibe at scruffy Corbyn

-

HE caused uproar in the Commons yesterday by giving Jeremy Corbyn a dressing down over his scruffy appearance.

But five hours later David Cameron demonstrated he does not always follow his own sartorial advice, ditching his jacket and tie to address a rally of pro-EU Conservatives.

The Prime Minister faced further embarrassment when it emerged he had similarly dressed down for a video chat with a smartly dressed Barack Obama just hours before he tore into the Labour leader.

Mr Cameron turned on Mr Corbyn at Prime Minister’s Questions after he was goaded over his mother Mary’s decision to sign an anti-cuts petition. Labour business spokesman Angela Eagle appeared to urge him to ‘ask your mother’ what she thinks about the NHS. He said: ‘I think she would look across the despatch box and she would say, “Put on a proper suit, do up your tie and sing the national anthem”.’

A message from Mr Corbyn’s official Twitter account later quoted Albert Einstein, saying: ‘If most of us are ashamed of shabby clothes and shoddy furniture, let us be more ashamed of shabby ideas and shoddy philosophies.’

But Mr Cameron later risked accusations of double standards as he removed his jacked and tie to address pro-EU Tory MPs in London, telling his audience: ‘I have to say, as you can see, I have tonight ignored my mother’s own advice.’

Labour MPs yesterday accused him of a ‘nasty personal attack’. A senior Labour source said: ‘I think when you are losing an argument, you resort to personal insult.’
