EVER dreamed of a job where your pets can come to work with you?

Dave Hume, a Trophy Pet Foods franchisee in Barnard Castle, Co Durham, feels his dogs not only inspire him in business but make a valuable contribution by working as a marketing aide.

He says: ‘Having four dogs gives me credibility with customers for our pet food and accessories delivery service.

‘Other dog owners see me out walking Toby, our German Shepherd cross, Elsa, a Hovawart, and our two Westies, and they know I’m a dog lover who understands the issues they face in feeding their own pets.’

Dave, 59, who is the Trophy Pet Foods franchisee of the year, also takes the dogs to shows and events where he is marketing his service.

‘They attract a lot of attention to our stand because the Hovawart [a medium to large German guard dog breed] is rare and everyone loves Westies,’ he says.

He advises others considering investing in a pet services franchise, and adds: ‘ It helps if you have animals of your own because you can talk from first- hand experience about their behaviour, condition and food preferences, which gives other pet owners confidence in you and helps promote your business.’

The Trophy Pet Foods franchise requires an investment of £13,995 including training and support. Sue Reid, sales and marketing director at Trophy Pet Foods, says: ‘We recently launched a new nutritional qualification which enhances the in-house training of all franchisees, boosting their capacity to advise customers on pet dietary issues.’

Peter Maxted, franchisor of Pets, Homes And Gardens, says: ‘Having their own pets is a big marketing benefit for our 14 franchisees. We offer dog creches, where customers’ dogs can socialise with others, including those of the franchisee. There is considerable demand for this.’

The franchisees also offer care for all kinds of animals, including cats and smaller pets.

‘If a franchisee has experience in looking after a range of their own pets, the care experience they have gained can be used to market their service,’ says Peter. The franchise costs £495.
