- By Izzy Ferris

A HEARTBROKEN groom woke up the morning after his wedding to discover his bride had died in her sleep.

Mariola Michalowski, 38, passed away just hours after celebrating her marriage to Krzystof Michalowski, 34.

Mr Michalowski had woken to feed their youngest child, Veronica, aged one, believing that his new wife was still asleep. When he returned, he realised she was not breathing and began to try to revive her.

He called an ambulance but, shortly after arriving, the paramedics said Mrs Michalowski had been dead for several hours.

Although the cause of death has not yet been established, Mrs Michalowski suffered from epilepsy and it is believed she may have had a

fit in her sleep. The couple, who have two children, Olivier, two, and Veronica, married at the register office in Richmond, North Yorkshire, on Friday, May 13.

Just days later, Mr Michalowski, an office manager, was forced to return to the venue to register his wife’s death after she died on Saturday, May 14.

The heartbroken father said their last day together had been the ‘perfect send-off’ for his wife.

He added: ‘She was the best thing that ever happened to me. She was the kindest person. I would be stressed about life and she would always tell me to live in the moment. This doesn’t feel real yet.’

The couple, who are both originally from Poland, were together for six years before they tied the knot in front of their closest friends and family last Friday.

After the registry office ceremony they celebrated at a pub and then with a reception at a cricket club.

Some guests joined the newlyweds for an after-party at their home. Mr Michalowski added: ‘The day was just amazing. There was loads of entertainment and the kids loved it.

‘ Mariola was the happiest I’d ever seen her. At the after-party, my father, who is over from Poland, insisted that we opened all of the wedding gifts and Mariola was so overwhelmed by everybody’s kindness.

‘The next morning Veronica woke me up crying and I went to get her milk and left Mariola sleeping.

‘After a while I started to think something felt unnatural. I tried waking her up and when I turned her over it was obvious that she had had an epileptic fit.’

He said his wife had had with epilepsy for more than 20 years and would have four to five fits every month, leaving her unable to work.

He added: ‘The whole family and everybody loved her. She was just an angel.’
